She’s not spoken to me for three days. I could force her but I’m unwilling to play stupid games. I’ve too much to focus on. So I leave her to be silent.

I get on with my job. I eat alone each day, normally late. I barely see her and when I do, she turns and walks away.

It all comes to a head the morning of the fourth day. I’m heading for my study when she appears in front of me, arms folded, eyes filled with anger.

“You don’t give a shit, do you?” she says, tapping a foot impatiently. “Well, do you?”

“I haven’t got time for this,” I reply, going to step around her.

“You left me thinking they were tied up in the lakehouse all this time. Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I don’t answer to you, Selina.”

“You left me thinking you were a heartless bastard. Why would you do that?”

I sigh. “What do you want me to say?”

“I want you to explain why I only just found out that you moved them an hour after our argument. That you got them medical attention. That they’re in one of the staff buildings being well looked after.

“You could have told me any of those things at any time but instead you keep your mouth shut and leave me hating you. Why not tell me?”

“Because you needed to learn a lesson.”

“And what lesson is that?”

“That you don’t know a thing about me. You don’t know who I am, why I do the things I do. You wanted to hate me. Why not let you? Give vent to those feelings, get them all out the way. Then we can carry on as before.”

“I don’t understand a thing you’re saying.”

I shake my head. “I am not doing this for your approval. Everything I do is to keep you safe, not for your approval.”

“How does moving them keep me safe?”

“Because if I left them in the lakehouse, they’d have died of their injuries. You’d have been pissed at me when you found out and I’d have had to deal with you instead of concentrating on the son of a bitch who keeps burning our businesses and threatening to kill you.”

“But you could have just told me.”

I nod. “I suppose I could have done, but you could have gone and looked to see if they were still there. I didn’t hide what I did, I just didn’t advertise it.”

She softens a little. “I know you’re trying to protect me but you’re keeping my parents prisoner. I thought they were dying and you didn’t give a shit how I felt.”

“I don’t give a shit about them but I do about you. I’m not going to let them die if it creates stress for you and our baby.”

She touches her stomach. “I thought you’d forgotten about that.”

“How could I possibly forget?”

“Because you haven’t spoken to me in days.”

“You gave me the cold shoulder, Selina. You could have asked me about your parents. If you want the truth, I was waiting to see when you would.
